Procedures For Your Wood Flooring
Keep the wood floor surface free from dust, grit, sand and abrasive
particles by sweeping daily with a proper mop and vacuum. Remove
marks and discolorations from the surface with floor cleaner, Varsol
or mineral spirits.
- DO NOT use
a scrubbing machine or a wet mopping process for cleaning.
- DO NOT use
soaps and strong detergents.
- DO NOT use
water emulsion type waxes.
- DO NOT use
oil treated sweeping compounds or oil treated mops in daily maintenance
as they will eventually discolour the wood.
Keep Water Off The Floor Surface
Never wash your hardwood floors with water. Do not leave water or
any other liquid to dry on your floors. Avoid tracking water onto
your floors by protecting your floors at exterior doorways with
mats or rugs.
Prevent Indentation Marks and Scratches
Use adequate floor protection (felt pads) under all furniture and
chair legs, to prevent scratching the floor. Use protective mats
at doorways, in front of reception desks, walkways or checkout counters.
Protect your floor when moving heavy pieces of furniture or appliances.
Anytime heavy objects are moved across a hardwood floor it should
be protected by rolling over plywood protection only.
Wood floors will show indentation marks caused by high pressure
points such as ladies' high-heeled shoes. Do not wear shoes that
are covered with dirt, gravel or abrasive dust. Keep your pet's
nails cleaned and trimmed as they could damage the finish of your
hardwood floor. Although our EcoLast finish is very durable
and resistant, sharp and pointed objects can cause damage to your
floor.
Commercial Wood Floor Maintenance
REMEMBER:
The wood floor will expand during hot, humid days of summer, Dehumidify
and will shrink during dry winter days, Humidify.
Try to keep Relative Humidity at 45%.
The most damage to finishes is caused by excessive water being applied
during cleaning. (mopping with water).
Keep Water Off Wood Floors
Every floor is maintained differently depending on how much traffic
it will receive. Vacuum the floor daily, remove debris and buff
floors to restore the original luster. Spot clean your flooring
with Satin Finish cleaner where required. The floor cleaner will
not harm the wood flooring. The floor cleaner will not increase
the shine or change the appearance of the floor. It is only a cleaner.
In the summer months, use the cleaner over the entire floor every two weeks. Commercially, apply the cleaner by spray misting
and buffing the floor surface along the grain or length of boards.
Buff the floor until dry. Always use equipment in good repair. Spray
mist the floor cleaner over a section of floor about 10'x10'.
Using a 15 white Buff pad mounted under a floor polisher,
buff the area completely and continue to buff until dry. Then continue
on to the next section until the floor area is complete. If using
the applicator pad system in smaller room areas or around furniture,
spray mist in sections that can be easily reached with the applicator
and work in a back and forth motion to clean the floor. These pads
should be cleaned periodically and can be reused. Naturally when
required, replace. The 15 white buff pads should be turned
over and used as required. If dirty buff pads, or cotton covers
(from the applicator pad) are used, streaking will develop over
the floor surface.
If you do not sweep or vacuum the floor properly, small stones or
grit could lodge under the buff pads and cause scratches over the
floor surface. If the floor's appearance stands up longer, extend this process
to every three weeks and so on. If the floor area warrants extra attention shorten the span of cleaning.
Winter months should be handled in a similar manner. Use clean and
dry walk off mats for salt, water etc. The application of cleaner
will naturally require a change in cleaning time frames.
In the beginning, inspect your wood flooring to make sure the maintenance
program is working. Check for scratches and marks. Touch up as required.
EVERY FEW WEEKS.
Once you are satisfied, extend the inspection process.
